Item Description
6.25x9.25" hardcover with 48 pages published by Coventry House in 1932. Title appears on adhered paper strip on spine with chipped edges, but 90% complete. Front end paper has ink stamped name and date 1/29/37 in ink. Nine illustrations in woodcut style throughout and 23 titled verses. Verse titles include: "He Fed The Kids In Belgium" (anti-Hoover), "No Undue Violence" (anti Secretary of War Hurley), "The Black Boy's Prayer" (in the face of advancing troops), "Live and Learn" (anti Chief of Staff MacArthur). The lead verse "The Ashes of Anacosta" reads in full: "The Camp At Anacosta Now Is A Waste Of Ashes Black, For They Put The Torch To The Tattered Tent And The Flame To The Crazy Shack. But There's A Wasteland In Many A Heart That Rulers Do Not See: For The Searing Flame Of Betrayal Makes Ashes Of Loyalty." A rare artifact documenting the injustices done to America's unemployed World War I veterans.
