Item Description
Pinned to an ornate 8.25" ribbon badge reading "Assistant Master Of Ceremonies" is a softly-colored 1.75" TR button, no backpaper if it had one. Button reads "Souvenir Aug. 1910/Battle Of Osawatomie, 54th Anniversary And Roosevelt Celebration." Button displays cleanly, but in reflected light are two .25" and a very light 1" scratch on right bkg. and a very light .75" scratch across cheek at left. Visible essentially only by magnification are two shallow pinpoint nicks, two extremely minor 1/8" craze lines near rim edges and a .25" shallow surface cut line centered below word "Of." Defects are very small and show only with close scrutiny. Appearance remains Exc. and an extremely rare button issued for local event with this historical bkg.: Osawatomie was one of the free state settlements of the Emigrant Aid Society in 1855. On August 30, 1856, abolitionist John Brown lead the defense against a pro-slavery invasion of the town. After he and his followers were dispersed, the town was almost completely demolished by the pro-slavery men. TR attended this event at the John Brown Memorial Park and on August 31, 1910 delivered a speech that became a milestone along the road of the modern political state. His speech became known as the "New Nationalism Address." From the Philip G. Straus collection. Rare and only example known to us.
